Introducing Myself

Hello! My name is Noelia Toscano-Arteaga. This is my freshman year at UAF and I am double majoring in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education. I have somewhat of a background in music. I have been playing the violin for about eight years and have dabbled in different instruments since then. Although, more of my background is in dance. Dance has always been a big part of my life. My culture is Latino with roots in Peru. Peru has a rich background in dance and music. I grew up learning and performing different dances. This included folk dance and Afro-Latino dancing styles. Music has always been influential and a huge part of my life.

 Appealing Image:

Finding an image that I find appealing proved to be a difficult task. I am very indecisive and I actually found many images that could work. In the end, I had to do a very intensive search of reading in front of fireplace images. As the weather grows colder, my inner coziness grows. I love drinking warm tea in front of the fireplace with a good book.

My Relationship with Music:

I believe that I have a very close relationship with music. If music were a person, I think we would be best friends. I play, listen and dabble with music. The most that I do is listen to music. I am constantly listening to music during the day. I always have my headphones on to block outside noise. Depending on what I am doing, is what I am listening to. For instance, if I am working on homework then I am listening to instrumental jazz versions of pop songs. I found a great playlist for that on Apple Music. Sometimes I listen to my random Spotify playlists. Usually, I stick with Apple Music because of all the downloaded music I have. I believe I listen to a great variety of music. The one genre I despise is country music. It is not my cup of tea. My main genres are Latin pop, hip-hop, r&b, and rap. My current go-to songs are Hot-Wings, Bust Your Windows, No Role Modelz, Lo Que Siento, and Color Esperanza. I sadly have never attended a concert. I have wanted to go to many but it, unfortunately, has not happened. I do love going to venues where music is being performed. I love dancing and singing along to songs I know. I also think that live music has a different presence than listening to something online. It just seems magical.

Enjoyable Music:

Putting a link to music that I enjoy was probably the most challenging part of this assignment for me. My taste in music is all over the place. As well as my music does not have all clean lyrics. I figured that since this is somewhat of a school assignment, going with a clean song would be the safest bet.

  1. I hear you on the inner coziness. My musical taste is all over the place, and it doesn't have to be clean as long as there is some humor in it too. I even host a bi-annual Wildly Inappropriate Ukulele Songs on my Friday night show.

Music Analysis #1: "Lo Que Siento" by Cuco

For me, " Lo Que Siento" by Cuco is the best of both worlds. I love how the song is a clever blend of English and Spanish. As well, it is very relatable. I stumbled upon the song by having it sent to me by an old friend. The song had just come out and it put into words how I was feeling. I think that understanding the lyrics as well puts the entire song into perspective. For instance, the title of the song translates to "What I Feel." It remains one of my favorite songs and seems to be a theme song for different aspects of my life.  Click Here to listen to " Lo Que Siento " by Cuco - May 25, 2017, USA Basic Information      Cuco who is the singer of " Lo Que Siento" is actually the producer and composer of the song as well. According to an interview by Genius, Cuco says, "...in my head, I just heard the chord progression for Lo Que Siento in a way where it's mixed with a lot of Chicano rap. But then there's also that indie s...

Music and the Fictive Dream - Candy Store - Heathers: The Musical

For this assignment, I chose the song Candy Store from Heathers: The Musical. Heathers is a 2014 off-Broadway hit that is based on the 1988 film where three girls named Heather run their high school in Ohio. It started in 2010 with its origin being Joe's Pub. From all their power in high school, they spark disturbing actions and reactions from their classmates. It is said to have some resemblance to the movie Mean Girls.  The musical follows the story of a girl named Veronica. She is a so-called "misfit" who wants to be popular and part of the popular crowd at any price. The three girls who rule the school are the Heathers. They are three girls named Heather, there is Heather Chandler, Heather McNamara, and Heather Duke. Heather Chandler is the leader of the group. The musical opens awareness to different topics in teen culture such as sexual assault, school violence, bullying, and teen suicide.  Candy Store is the second song in Act One. During this song, Heather Chand...
