Musical Biography:
Britney Spears is an American triple threat. She is a singer, songwriter, and dancer. Although she is more known for her performance work than her compositions. Out of her 62 songs that she has released throughout her career, she is only credited with composition credits for 18 of them. That means more than 70% of her work is for performing. Britney is known as the "Princess of Pop." She is credited with having a majority of influence over reviving teen pop during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Her musical journey began at the age of 15 in 1997. This is when she first signed with Jive Records. She jumpstarted her career with her first two studio albums that are among the best-selling albums of all time. These albums were Baby One More Time (1999) and Oops!... I Did It Again (2000). From these albums she became the best-selling teenage artist of all time. She has nine albums with her latest album coming out in 2016. She as well has had 10 tours, and the last time she toured was in 2018.

What Role Does This Performer Serve?
We need musicians who simply interpret the compositions of others because they realize the connection between the composer's intentions and the artistic personality that the music possesses. Without performers, music would not have the same expression. Performers offer a musical interpretation of the composer's creative thoughts and process. Britney Spears in particular, is known for her unique sound. She has a combination of a deep and rich tone with what some describe as a youthful timbre. In some songs you can hear a bright and natural warmth. In some ways, her sound can also be described as nasally. She has traits of being a mezzo-soprano which translates to different tones and ranges throughout her songs. In her early music career, she was dubbed with having a "babyish coo," her register stayed in the higher range without coming too much into her lower range and normal voice. This vocal performance allowed for her to take the composer's vision and translate it to meet her image. Her most recent song, Tiny Dancer that is also with Elton John, features more of her deeper and normal voice. As well as she got older, her voice began to change and she now has a deeper voice than before.
In my opinion, Britney Spears really does have a unique and recognizable voice. Going back to timbre, I believe that it is breathy. I find her voice having more of a deep tone, even in her earlier career. I used to think of her songs having a gospel or choir type of feel. For example, ...Oops! I Did It Again, gives me a choir feel in how there is a deeper and richer supporting track running that does not particularly sound like her. I am not sure if that is her voice. Her performances also incorporate a lot of dancing. Although, when going through all of her music, I cannot imagine another artist performing them. Her unique sound gives a vibe that could not be replicated by other artists. I do not think anyone else could have made the same impact with these songs as Britney did.

I enjoy some of Britney Spears's music. I find it flabergasting that she only wrote 18 of her 62 songs. Also, it is crazy to think she got signed on with Jive Records when she was only 15. In my opinion, you are correct that music wouldn't have the same expression without performers. They are the face of the product being sold to listeners.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Britney Spears was a pop icon, but I don't think she was a great performer. Most of her performances feel like they are lip-synced, and in my opinion, I don't feel like she is a fantastic dancer. I think most of her hype comes from the aesthetic she has surrounding her. Whoever plans and coordinates her performances to bring out her attractive aesthetic is talented.
I enjoyed your role performer pick! I love Britney Spear's song "Oops! I Did It Again," one of my top favorites. It was interesting that learning that she had 62 songs that she had released, and only 18 were credited, was a shocker to me. I understand her performing percentage at 70% because there wasn't a time in the early 2000s when I didn't see her on the television screen—she's a great performer and artist, true, indeed, the Princess of Pop. Great Blog!
